Christiane Blattmann’s work Terminalia has wrapped itself around the smoking shelter, situated near the entrance of the Provinciehuis. The work consists of an intertwined system of drain pipes and textile fragments. There is an anthropomorphic resemblance, and from the moment the pipes and draped soft parts turn into something else, one might see a body as an infrastructural system, or an architecture turning its guts inside out. However, the pipes don't serve a functional purpose for water drainage, and the glass pavilion is transparent, lacking meaningful function and serving as an image of architecture instead. The viewer can experience the work of Christiane Blattmann from both inside and outside the glass cube.
Christiane Blattmann (1983, DE/BE) is an artist who lives in Brussels. Her sculptural practice aims to dissolve clear disciplines of creation and question the autonomy of these domains, highlighting conflicts between natural and designed environments. Sculpture appears as a spatial strategy to suspend oppositions between concepts of the inside and the outside. In her works, created with tactile materials like silicone, pigment, silk, jute, stone and metal, Blattmann creates intricate connections of things, relationships, and figures. Her artworks reflect fundamental questions of architecture that arise in the interaction between sculpture and everyday contexts like urbanism or fashion. Her understanding of the notion of sculpture is not merely formal – how can a sculpture occupy a space? – but also departs from a social perspective on the capacities of ‘space’. For example, perceiving sculpture as a catalyst for action for the viewer, be it in public or in the exhibition space.

Het werk Terminalia van Christiane Blattmann heeft zich om de rookruimte gewikkeld, die zich bevindt bij de ingang van het Provinciehuis. Het werk bestaat uit een in elkaar verweven systeem van afvoerbuizen en textielfragmenten. Er is een antropomorfe gelijkenis, en wanneer de pijpen en gedrapeerde zachte delen in iets anders veranderen, zou je een lichaam kunnen ontwaren als een infrastructureel systeem, of een architectuur die zijn ingewanden binnenstebuiten keert. De leidingen dienen echter geen functioneel doel voor de waterafvoer en het glazen paviljoen is transparant, mist enige zinvolle functie en dient in plaats daarvan als verbeelding van een architectuur. De kijker kan het werk van Christiane Blattmann zowel van binnen als van buiten de glazen kubus ervaren.
