For the first edition of Publiek Park in 2021, Evita Vasiļjeva created Seeds of Light, a site-specific work which referred to the lanternpoles that were installed for the World Fair of 1913.
The installation contained two aluminium cast reproductions of a Philips street light, which is a mass produced device that one can encounter all around the globe in the public sphere. Vasiljeva repurposed the archetypical light “box” into an alien(ating), material object, by means of hanging them with electric wire on the original lantern poles. The present poles are in a pitiful state of rust and deterioration and besides that they are supplemented with more recently produced light elements, causing an anachronistic friction in the usage and maintenance of these historical relics of the World Fair. Seeds of Light tackled the notion of street code/language, resembling the act of throwing broken sneakers over power cables that are suspended over the street. Secondly, the installation alluded to the practice of public execution in the early French revolution, whereas radical revolutionaries tended to hang aristocrats from the lantern poles in the public realm.
Evita Vasiļjeva (b. 1985) works with sculpture, installation, and sound. Having grown up in Latvia during the post-Soviet transition, the artist often draws on visual and sonic imagery of generic architecture and rough suburban landscapes. By manipulating and repurposing a large variety of matter, from domestic objects to construction materials, Evita Vasiļjeva provokes relational dynamics between spaces, architecture, memory, and spectators’ bodies. While her works tackle the issues of anxiety and control, they always remain open for multiple interpretations through ways of coexistence within the present moment.

Voor de eerste editie van Publiek Park in 2021 creëerde Evita Vasiļjeva Seeds of Light, een site-specifiek werk dat verwees naar de lantaarnpalen die werden geïnstalleerd voor de Wereldtentoonstelling van 1913.
De installatie bevatte twee aluminium reproducties van een Philips straatlantaarn, een in massa geproduceerd apparaat dat men overal ter wereld in de openbare ruimte kan tegenkomen. Vasiljeva hergebruikte de archetypische licht "doos" in een alien(ating), materieel object, door ze met elektrische draad aan de originele lantaarnpalen te hangen. De huidige palen verkeren in een erbarmelijke staat van roest en verval en bovendien zijn ze aangevuld met recenter geproduceerde lichtelementen, waardoor een anachronistische frictie ontstaat in het gebruik en onderhoud van deze historische relikwieën van de Wereldtentoonstelling. Seeds of Light ging in op het begrip straatcode/taal en leek op het gooien van kapotte gympen over elektriciteitskabels die boven de straat hingen. Ten tweede verwees de installatie naar de praktijk van openbare executie in de vroege Franse revolutie, toen radicale revolutionairen aristocraten ophingen aan lantaarnpalen in het publieke domein.

De kunstenares groeide op in Letland tijdens de post-Sovjetovergang en baseert zich vaak op visuele en sonische beelden van generieke architectuur en ruige voorstedelijke landschappen. Door het manipuleren en hergebruiken van een grote verscheidenheid aan materialen, van huishoudelijke objecten tot bouwmaterialen, provoceert Evita Vasiļjeva een relationele dynamiek tussen ruimtes, architectuur, herinneringen en lichamen van toeschouwers. Hoewel haar werken de kwesties van angst en controle aanpakken, blijven ze altijd open voor meerdere interpretaties door manieren van coëxistentie binnen het huidige moment.
