For Publiek Park, Gaëlle Leenhardt carried out artistic and historical research on the pediment of the gatehouse in Citadel Park, which resulted in L’Union fait la force, an outdoors installation that connected two historical, sculpted lions on opposite sides of the park. Next to that, a series of 111 concrete birds were swerving through the Floraliënhal.
Gaëlle Leenhardt’s (°1987, FR) practice is rooted in the comprehensive knowledge and the thorough study of materials. The historical, archaeological, architectural, sedimentary and human characteristics of her working environment resolutely determine her artistic production. ‘To excavate’ is the verb that describes Gaëlle Leenhardt’s work the best whereas her practice expands as a palimpsest on a material and conceptual level. Leenhardt maps, records and archives local materials, symbols and imagery as an inherent part of her installative trajectory, resulting in an auto-referential network of residues and interventions.
