For Publiek Park, Helen Anna Flanagan showed a video that interacted with and reflected upon the specific genius loci of the Citadelpark and its complex social construct through ingenious dialogues and audiovisual scenery. The inner spaces of the Poortgebouw, the only visible remnant of the original citadel, were opened for the first time after a long period of closure which had resulted from squatting issues.
Swamps & Ponds is loosely based on the speculative origins of a community of peasants known as the Toxicophagi. The Toxicophagi built up resistance to the poison arsenic, by regularly consuming it. This poison served as a symbolic starting point to explore the power of invisible substances or structures and the tolerance of an overlooked collective. The film explores the impacts substances and ‘invisible’ toxic forces have on an environment and those who inhabit it. The film resonates with present societal conflicts in urban planning and with the initial inauguration of the Citadel Park as a green and healthy environment for the bourgeoisie in an increasingly polluted and overly industrialised city.
Helen Anna Flanagan (°1988, UK) intertwines real events with fictitious narratives in order to produce video-installations and performances that unfold the complexion of the societal fabric. Her works are constructed by imaginative scenarios – often rooting from the motive of ‘the absurd’. Flanagan outlines and subverts screenplays of social constructions and political subtexts by means of focusing on affectious emotions, bodily labor, playful conversations and gestures of the everyday.

De binnenruimtes van het Poortgebouw, het enige zichtbare overblijfsel van de oorspronkelijke citadel, werden voor het eerst geopend na een lange periode van sluiting als gevolg van kraakproblemen.
Swamps & Ponds is losjes gebaseerd op de speculatieve oorsprong van een gemeenschap van boeren bekend als de Toxicophagi. De Toxicophagi bouwden weerstand op tegen het gif arsenicum, door het regelmatig te te consumeren. Dit gif diende als symbolisch uitgangspunt om de kracht van onzichtbare stoffen of structuren en de tolerantie van een over het hoofd gezien collectief te onderzoeken. De film onderzoekt de impact die stoffen en 'onzichtbare' toxische krachten hebben op een omgeving en degenen die er wonen. De film resoneert met de huidige maatschappelijke conflicten over stadsplanning en met de initiële inauguratie van het Citadelpark als een groene en gezonde omgeving voor de bourgeoisie in een steeds meer vervuilde en overmatig geïndustrialiseerde stad.
