Opening Ceremony, 2022
In Provinciehuis, Opening Ceremony, the latest episode of Jakub Jansa’s video series Club of Opportunities, is screened. The series revolves around a fictional hybrid character named Red Herring, an imaginative blend of human and the vegetable celeriac. The episode offers a peek into the garden ceremony of the Flower Union, a government of plants. During this ceremony, the celery-man delivers a speech. Subsequently, the supernatural figure of clairvoyant, having lost its ability to foresee the future, assumes control in the latter part of the film. This clairvoyant leads the other flowers into an eco-sexual festive ritual. Through this ritual, the fortune teller demonstrates to the plants that by uniting their pistils and calyxes, they can reach out to the public and change the course of things. The work is on view during the opening hours of Provinciehuis.

At the Red Herring Salon, an earlier chapter of the Club of Opportunities is screened. Episode 3, named My Name is Red Herring, introduces the main character of the series, the hybrid creature between a human and a celery. At the heart of his narrative is his struggle with his own origin story and the revolt against it. He discovers that his mythology is simply storytelling. By taking control of this storytelling, he is able to steer it in a different direction. So from his safe place, inside the mythos, he enters a battlefield and wrestles on a political level. He is individualising himself and becoming a ‘dark-side influencer’.
Jakub Jansa (1989, CZ) is a visual artist based in Prague, working in various media ranging from film to sculptural elements, installations and live performances. His practice crosses the boundaries of genres from drama to absurd comedy and employs fiction, humour and elements of the grotesque to develop complex exhibition environments that tell stories about today’s social struggles. His exhibitions tend to merge with the architecture of the spaces they inhabit. They are reminiscent of film or TV sets, where the narrative gradually unfolds through a carefully designed dramaturgy of various elements (video, objects, live action), while we – the visitors – move through the space.

In het Provinciehuis wordt Opening Ceremony, de laatste episode van Jakub Jansa's videoserie Club of Opportunities, vertoond. De serie draait om een fictief hybride personage genaamd Red Herring, een imaginaire combinatie van mens en knolselder. De aflevering biedt een kijkje in de tuinceremonie van de Flower Union, een overheid van planten. Tijdens deze ceremonie houdt de selderij-mens een toespraak. Vervolgens neemt de bovennatuurlijke figuur van de helderziende, die zijn vermogen om de toekomst te voorspellen heeft verloren, in het laatste deel van de video de controle over. De helderziende leidt de andere bloemen binnen in een eco-seksueel feestelijk ritueel. Door middel van deze rite laat de waarzegger de planten inzien dat ze de loop der dingen kunnen beïnvloeden, door hun stampers en kelken te verenigen. Het werk is te zien tijdens de openingstijden van het Provinciehuis.
