In the District Hall, Mathias Mu's artwork pays tribute to Robot Charlie who joined the Antwerp District when the city service desk launched in the renovated Harmonie building. Charlie was designed for basic customer service duties, yet his career at the District Hall was brief due to technical issues and his popularity among children. Mathias Mu's sand-printed sculpture rests atop an aluminium pedestal infused with mushroom-growing manure. The incorporation of lion’s mane in this installation alludes to a city planning strategy used by researchers in Japan, where fungus is used to develop a more efficient transport infrastructure. This serves as an example of the potential of collaborative processes involving humans, technology, and other organisms.

Mathias Mu’s artworks exhibited at the Red Herring Salon question the relationship between humans and AI. Considering the staggering processing speed of AI, which is roughly 10,000 times faster than that of humans (to draw a parallel, humans operate and think approximately 10,000 times faster than plants), it is possible that AI might regard humans as comparatively less intelligent entities, creating a fundamental barrier to understanding each other's experiences. Mathias Mu playfully raises questions about AI as the next step in evolution. Within this perspective, it's essential for AI to intertwine with nature, and vice versa. Blurring the boundary between digital and physical realms, the visual features of Mathias Mu’s digitally designed work resemble natural, organic forms.
Mathias Mu (1991, BE) is a multidisciplinary artist from Antwerp. In his practice, Mu embraces digital cultures, technoromanticism and hyperspace, as well as emerging technologies and media, exploring their potential for artistic expression within the context of contemporary art. Mathias Mu creates objects, performances, sound works and installations. His work questions the increasingly blurry boundaries between the physical and digital, as well as the organic and artificial. In their creation, Mu’s sculptural objects transform from two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional renders, to AI-generated forms, into digitally fabricated physical objects. Additionally, the artist takes a critical look at various issues linked to sustainability that digital production insinuates, exploring the use of 3D printing in biomaterials such as clay, mycelium, and others.

In het Districtshuis Harmonie brengt het kunstwerk van Mathias Mu een eerbetoon aan Robot Charlie die bij het district Antwerpen werd tewerkgesteld toen de nieuwe balie van de stadsdienst opende in het gerenoveerde Harmoniegebouw. Charlie was ontworpen voor elementaire dienstverlening, maar zijn carrière in het districtshuis was slechts van korte duur door technische problemen en zijn grote populariteit bij kinderen. De in zand geprinte sculptuur van Mathias Mu rust op een aluminium sokkel die een broed voor pruikzwam herbergt. Het gebruik van paddenstoelen in deze installatie verwijst naar een strategie voor stadsplanning die wordt gebruikt door onderzoekers in Japan, waar schimmels gebruikt worden om een efficiëntere transportinfrastructuur uit te stippelen. Dit is een voorbeeld van het potentieel van samenwerkingsprocessen tussen mensen, technologie en andere organismen.
