At the fruit section of Verma Supermarket, Metahaven is presenting an intervention in the form of fruit wrappers. In Europe, and particularly in Italy, oranges have often been wrapped in thin papers with printed graphics as a way of advertising. At times these graphics have been translations of the zeitgeist in one way or another. Take, for instance, a Sicilian orange wrapper picturing astronauts on the Moon, with some oranges littered across its surface. In this case, the carrier serves more as a means of contextualization rather than promotion. Fruit is enjoyable, familiar, healthy, intimate, and common, but it is also entwined with larger systems. By creating fruit wrappers as both objects of aesthetic pleasure and carriers of layered narratives, the work of Metahaven highlights the dynamic interplay between nature, culture, and human experience.
Autopoeisis (exhibition at TICK TACK)
At TICK TACK, Metahaven is presenting their solo exhibition Autopoiesis. Autopoiesis, a concept introduced in 1972 by the Chilean evolutionary biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela, describes the notion of “self-creation.” The exhibition encompasses films and tactile textile works, highlighting a constant interconnectedness between cognition and feeling. By combining digital aesthetics with weaving and embroidery, narrative and craftspersonship, the textile works – some of which were made especially for the exhibition – challenge boundaries between the virtual and the tangible, between modes of experience, whilst the film works provide their cinematic timebase.
The artist collective Metahaven was founded in the late 2000s by Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden. Metahaven are known for their interdisciplinary approach to art, filmmaking, design, and research. Through their pioneering, yet subtle future-forward practice, they explore uncharted and undeclared visual culture, being one of this domain’s most compelling voices. Functioning as a strategic research and design studio, they navigate the intricate intersection of communication, aesthetics, and politics. Metahaven's work reflects political and social issues in collaboratively produced graphic design objects and media.

In de fruitafdeling van Verma Supermarkt creëert Metahaven een interventie in de vorm van fruitwikkels. In Europa, en in het bijzonder in Italië, zijn sinaasappels vaak verpakt in dunne papiertjes met gedrukte afbeeldingen als een manier om reclame te maken. Vaak zijn deze afbeeldingen indirecte vertalingen van de tijdgeest. Neem bijvoorbeeld een Siciliaanse sinaasappelverpakking met een afbeelding van astronauten in een met sinaasappels bezaaid maanlandschap. In dit geval dient de drager meer als contextualisering dan als promotie. Fruit is lekker, vertrouwd, gezond, intiem en gewoon, maar het is ook verweven met grotere systemen. Door fruitwikkels te maken als zowel objecten van esthetisch genot als dragers van gelaagde verhalen, benadrukt het werk van Metahaven de dynamische wisselwerking tussen natuur, cultuur en menselijke ervaring.
