Every Collection Hides Another Collection, 2020
Every Collection Hides Another Collection is an artwork that is permanently installed at the Provinciehuis to showcase the Collection of the Province of Antwerp. On the occasion of Publiek Park, the curatorial team of the project joined forces with the Collection manager Bob Daems, to create a new selection of artworks presented within Nico Dockx’s installation.
The central element of this presentation is found archived under the soil of the Provinciehuis garden, on the foundational walls of the building. In 2016, together with Sara Weyns and Pieternel Vermoortel, Nico Dockx invited six artists to create artworks on the outer walls of the underground parking lot of the Provinciehuis. This project was named (ON)begane grond. These works were visible for two weeks, after which they were buried, disappearing underground as archaeological finds for the future. The selection further leans into the themes of parks and underground, which echoes in the presence of lyre motifs in Harmonie Park and Koning Albert Park. The motif holds a symbolic connection to the story of Orpheus, who ventured into the realm of the underworld to retrieve his beloved Eurydice. The installation is on view during the opening hours of Provinciehuis.
Nico Dockx (1974, BE) is a visual artist, curator, publisher and researcher with a fundamental interest in archives and structural processes such as data, memories, information, distribution and management. His interventions, publications, texts, sounds, images, installations, performances and conversations – which are usually the result of collaborations with other artists – embody the relationship between perception and memory, which he interprets differently each time. Living in Antwerp, he is an educator at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, leading the multidisciplinary project Expanding Academy. The project currently focuses on the notion of social sculpture and the possibilities of opening up the academy towards its neighbouring public square through artistic interventions and happenings.

Every Collection Hides Another Collection is een kunstwerk dat permanent geïnstalleerd is in het Provinciehuis om de collectie van de Provincie Antwerpen te tonen. Ter gelegenheid van Publiek Park werkte het curatorenteam van het project samen met Collectiebeheerder Bob Daems om een nieuwe selectie kunstwerken te creëren die gepresenteerd worden binnen de installatie van Nico Dockx.
Het centrale element van deze presentatie is gearchiveerd onder de grond van de Provincietuin, op de funderingsmuren van het gebouw. In 2016 nodigde Nico Dockx, samen met Sara Weyns en Pieternel Vermoortel, zes kunstenaars uit om kunstwerken te creëren op de buitenmuren van de ondergrondse parking van het Provinciehuis. Dit project kreeg de naam (ON)begane grond. Deze werken waren twee weken zichtbaar, daarna werden ze begraven en verdwenen ze onder de grond als archeologische vondsten voor de toekomst. De selectie sluit verder aan bij de thema's van parken en het ondergrondse, wat terugkomt in de aanwezigheid van liermotieven in het Harmoniepark en het Koning Albertpark. Het motief heeft een symbolische verbinding met het verhaal van Orpheus, die zich in het rijk van de onderwereld waagde om zijn geliefde Eurydice terug te vinden. De installatie is te zien tijdens de openingstijden van het Provinciehuis.
