Xuan-Lin Wang performed in the glasshouses and the outside lawns of the botanical garden, where she entered in strong dialogue with the residing plants and flowers of this unique setting. The botanical garden was initially connected to the Citadelpark in one whole landscape before it was pervaded by a road.
During the four days of Publiek Park, Xuan-Lin Wang performed To be a plant in the botanical garden on various locations, dialoguing with specific plants and flowers in a static bodily state. The human presence of Wang therefore interacted with and embodied the abundance of exotic species within the ancient glasshouses. To be a plant in the botanical garden results in a series of prints of the artist’s body, surfacing textures from human skin that resembles the veins of plant’s leaves and petals or the touch of tree’s bark. The prints remained as vestiges of the ongoing performances where Xuan-Lin Wang wore garments made of natural tissues, diffusing the dichotomy between human and nature shapes, textures and states.
Xuan-Lin Wang (°1994, TW) is a textile designer, artist, performer and photographer whose practice tackles the potency of symbiotic relations between human beings, their natural environment and the role of art within this constellation. In Wang’s sculptural and activist performances, the artist subverts the idea of culture versus nature by means of interweaving both fields of research.
