Words of Diversity, 2023

Guy Woueté’s work Words of Diversity can be found in various locations within Harmonie Park, Koning Albert Park and the Garden of the Provinciehuis. Alluding to protest signs, these performative sculptures are made of four banners. Three of these banners are linked to two grocery shopping carts. The work contains phrases linking to various societal issues. One of the carts contains empty cans, while the other holds (take-away) protest banners. Wouéte employs elements of daily life to examine the lasting effects of systemic injustice, utilising the visual vocabulary of social justice movements and the capitalization of protest demonstrations. His work prompts reflection on park accessibility, economic paradigms, and future possibilities. A performance by the artist takes place on the opening day of Publiek Park, and the work will be activated on Saturdays, September 16 & 23, between 16:00 and 18:00.

Paradise, 2023

The work Paradise borrows words from Octavia Butler’s Parable Series. For Pei-Hsuan Wang, the significance of Butler’s writing is linked with her migration journey leading to Belgium, particularly resonating with her concepts of continuation, resilience, adaptability, and shape-shifting. The artist reflects on her connection to her family's history, as well as to the future, encapsulated in the image of a child – a shared symbol of both past and future projections. The verse of Octavia Butler is inscribed in front of the District Hall by using a pressure cleaner, a method adopted from Taiwanese street protestors, unveiling words by erasing layers of dirt from the pavement, symbolically traversing through the layers of time.

Five Figs, 2023Pei-Hsuan Wang’s work Five Figs is placed on the fencing of the football field in Harmonie Park. The banner depicts the artist's mother’s drawing of five figs which she grew in her garden. It is made on the reverse side of a music sheet, creating a watermark-like effect that subtly permeates the image. The drawing is accompanied by a proverb written in Chinese: “Even under harsh conditions, with genuine care, patience, and persistence, one's efforts can come to fruition.”

Pei-Hsuan Wang’s (1987, TW/BE) practice is rooted in ways of engaging with her identity, much of which is shaped by the artist and her family's diasporic migration from Taiwan to the United States. A search for belonging, folklore, family history, bio(mytho)graphical narratives and geopolitical musings are interwoven in her work, which primarily takes the form of sculpture, installation, drawing, and video. The artist’s recent projects are tributes and prayers to her kinship. Her niece Iris, a first-generation Taiwanese American, has inspired a body of work that imagines racial and cultural hybridity alongside various archetypes in nature and in myths. Animal presences become a kind of guardian and portal, giving form to the inner experience.

	NLParadise, 2023

Untitled, 2022

Hussein Shikha’s video installation Untitled is an animated interpretation of a carpet design. Carpets can bear witness to very significant moments in history: cultural and artistic developments, the rise and fall of civilisations, and the subsequent emerging and merging of cultures in a non-linear way. They record vegetation and other lives that may or may not exist anymore while bearing and witnessing histories that almost always take place underneath Eurocentric discourses. In his work, Hussein Shikha weaves pixels into threads of past memories, integrating cultural signifiers that bridge the East and the West, as well as reflections on culturally specific philosophies and religious beliefs.

Hussein Shikha (1995, IQ/BE) is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, writer, and researcher based in Antwerp. He was born and raised in Iraq and moved to Antwerp in 2009 where he is currently based. His work includes experimental film, animation, textiles, and interactive installations. Hussein Shikha takes the manipulation and transformation of the southern Iraqi carpet – with all its philosophies – as a starting point to understand design and art from Eastern and non-Eastern perspectives. Through his research-based work, Hussein Shikha examines possible shifts towards more inclusive and less Eurocentric perceptions of visual arts.Hussein Shikha’s contribution to Publiek Park is a result of a partnership between Publiek Park and De Singel.

	NLUntitled, 2022

	ENCondition IX, 2023

Leander Schönweger’s work Condition IX is created specifically for its location in the garden of the Provinciehuis. The object is a play on the architectural element of stairs and an exploration of psychological and physical conditions. Stairs, like hallways, are constructions that connect one space to another – areas of passage. By crafting stairs that don't lead anywhere, eliminating their intended purpose, the artist examines the sheer impact of this space on a person. On the other hand, upward-going stairs are symbolically linked to positive progress, so introducing a dead end also carries a touch of irony. The walls surrounding the structure of Condition IX resemble a cage, an element repeatedly appearing in the artistic practice of Leander Schönweger. The visitors are invited to enter the sculptural object, engaging firsthand with its impact on both their physical sensations and mental perceptions.

Leander Schönweger (1986, IT/BE) is an Italian artist based in Brussels and Vienna. Schönweger creates installations and objects, using materials and inspirations from daily life. Employing an in-situ approach, the artist constructs spaces within spaces, orchestrating a transformation of the viewer's encounter with a given environment. Characteristic of his work are the elements of tension, suspense, and unexpected revelation. These elements unfold through carefully designed labyrinths and pathways, containing subtle imprints that reverberate within the subconscious. Intrigued by the intricate dynamics between individuals and their surroundings, Schönweger explores the psychological responses that ensue, evoking a range of primal or naive reactions such as claustrophobia, anticipation, disillusionment, and an array of vivid sensations reminiscent of childhood.

	NLCondition IX, 2023

(dazzling) garderobe, 2023

Paola Siri Renard’s work (dazzling) garderobe enters into a dialogue with the Monument to Peter Benoit, located at Harmonie Park, which was designed by the Belgian architect Henry Van De Velde. In response to Van De Velde’s artistic legacy, the artist appropriates various elements of his Art Nouveau designs. Drawing from the mythical wings of Lucifer and from the water element present in the monument, she incorporates migration and adaptation narratives into hybrid shapes of unidentified insects. This sculpture becomes a tangible process of transitional states, being neither human, nor animal or vegetal, merging natural and manufactured objects of defence.

Paola Siri Renard (1993, FR/BE) is an artist living and working in Paris and Brussels. Her sculptural work often refers to art history, architecture and natural processes, like sloughing or fossilisation. The artist isolates sculptural ornaments, which are then rescaled and segmented, and reassembled into new compositions. Stripped from the original context, the elements gain an anachronistic quality, carrying aesthetic codes from varying time periods. Metallic structures like mechanical bones support the ornamental elements. Renard’s visual language evokes metamorphosis, bodies disintegrating and morphing into new constellations. Her sculptures unveil and distort formal grids and political structures, subtly influencing spatial arrangements and dynamics of social interactions. Through her physical reappropriation of prevailing architectural forms, Renard's work raises questions about the treatment of heritage, its dissemination, and the exclusionary underpinnings that marginalise specific identities.

garderobe, 2023

	ENPiece of Heart, 2023

Yemo Park’s work Piece of Heart draws inspiration from the tale of The Dog of Flanders, written by the English author Ouida. It is about a boy Nello and his dog Patrasche, who live in Hoboken. Nello had a talent for art, but the crude circumstances of his life never allowed him to follow his artistic aspirations. Within the dog park, which sits next to a tram line leading to Hoboken, Yemo Park introduces five sculptures that illustrate elements from the tale. Furthermore, Yemo Park introduces a sequel to the story in which she loses her own dog and endeavours to craft a special whistle, to help the dog to find its way back to her. Eventually, she finds a dog in a container park, which has an extraordinary personality and characteristics. This story is a source material for the artist’s new business venture – a dog whistle company. The whistles presented at the dog enclosure are based on the portraits of the animals that visit the park. In collaboration with Merel Schoonen, Yemo Park’s story is developed into a comic. Every week during Publiek Park, a new episode of the comic is released on Publiek Park website, and every weekend, there is a performance at the dog enclosure by Yemo Park.

The practice of Yemo Park (1990, KR/BE) revolves around creating fictitious companies. Each of her projects stems from a business idea for potentially lucrative sculptural objects and multimedia installations, tackling or inducing a particular consumer need or desire. Although the premise of the practice is linked to appropriating the mechanisms of capitalism, it is essentially concerned with the search for alternative systems of economy. Yemo Park questions the artist’s relationship with the market and society while testing out the role of an entrepreneurial subject. The new systems of economy she plays with also propose a new market in between the existing art market and the relevant industry sector her business invests in. Yemo Park’s business ventures include Dogs Die Love Doesn’t – a company that creates memorial statues of dead dogs, Gentle Bite Long Lasting Pain – a portable self-defence sculpture business for women, and an artist cooperation of swimming pool design and construction Deep Pleasure Pool Club.

Piece of Heart, 2023

In the District Hall, Mathias Mu's artwork pays tribute to Robot Charlie who joined the Antwerp District when the city service desk launched in the renovated Harmonie building. Charlie was designed for basic customer service duties, yet his career at the District Hall was brief due to technical issues and his popularity among children. Mathias Mu's sand-printed sculpture rests atop an aluminium pedestal infused with mushroom-growing manure. The incorporation of lion’s mane in this installation alludes to a city planning strategy used by researchers in Japan, where fungus is used to develop a more efficient transport infrastructure. This serves as an example of the potential of collaborative processes involving humans, technology, and other organisms.

Chasing Ephemera (exhibition at Red Herring Salon)

Mathias Mu’s artworks exhibited at the Red Herring Salon question the relationship between humans and AI. Considering the staggering processing speed of AI, which is roughly 10,000 times faster than that of humans (to draw a parallel, humans operate and think approximately 10,000 times faster than plants), it is possible that AI might regard humans as comparatively less intelligent entities, creating a fundamental barrier to understanding each other's experiences. Mathias Mu playfully raises questions about AI as the next step in evolution. Within this perspective, it's essential for AI to intertwine with nature, and vice versa. Blurring the boundary between digital and physical realms, the visual features of Mathias Mu’s digitally designed work resemble natural, organic forms.

Mathias Mu (1991, BE) is a multidisciplinary artist from Antwerp. In his practice, Mu embraces digital cultures, technoromanticism and hyperspace, as well as emerging technologies and media, exploring their potential for artistic expression within the context of contemporary art. Mathias Mu creates objects, performances, sound works and installations. His work questions the increasingly blurry boundaries between the physical and digital, as well as the organic and artificial. In their creation, Mu’s sculptural objects transform from two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional renders, to AI-generated forms, into digitally fabricated physical objects. Additionally, the artist takes a critical look at various issues linked to sustainability that digital production insinuates, exploring the use of 3D printing in biomaterials such as clay, mycelium, and others.

	NLChasing Ephemera, 2023

Wrapping worlds, 2023

At the fruit section of Verma Supermarket, Metahaven is presenting an intervention in the form of fruit wrappers. In Europe, and particularly in Italy, oranges have often been wrapped in thin papers with printed graphics as a way of advertising. At times these graphics have been translations of the zeitgeist in one way or another. Take, for instance, a Sicilian orange wrapper picturing astronauts on the Moon, with some oranges littered across its surface. In this case, the carrier serves more as a means of contextualization rather than promotion. Fruit is enjoyable, familiar, healthy, intimate, and common, but it is also entwined with larger systems. By creating fruit wrappers as both objects of aesthetic pleasure and carriers of layered narratives, the work of Metahaven highlights the dynamic interplay between nature, culture, and human experience.

Autopoeisis (exhibition at TICK TACK)

At TICK TACK, Metahaven is presenting their solo exhibition Autopoiesis. Autopoiesis, a concept introduced in 1972 by the Chilean evolutionary biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela, describes the notion of “self-creation.” The exhibition encompasses films and tactile textile works, highlighting a constant interconnectedness between cognition and feeling. By combining digital aesthetics with weaving and embroidery, narrative and craftspersonship, the textile works – some of which were made especially for the exhibition – challenge boundaries between the virtual and the tangible, between modes of experience, whilst the film works provide their cinematic timebase. The artist collective Metahaven was founded in the late 2000s by Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden. Metahaven are known for their interdisciplinary approach to art, filmmaking, design, and research. Through their pioneering, yet subtle future-forward practice, they explore uncharted and undeclared visual culture, being one of this domain’s most compelling voices. Functioning as a strategic research and design studio, they navigate the intricate intersection of communication, aesthetics, and politics. Metahaven's work reflects political and social issues in collaboratively produced graphic design objects and media.

Wrapping worlds, 2023

Rolling Border Pole, 2023

Jiyoung Kim’s work Rolling Border Pole bears reference to the boundary post between the districts of Antwerp and Berchem, located on the edge of Koning Albert Park. Playing with reversing the characteristics of this monument – heavy, hard, vertical, immobile and timeless – Jiyoung Kim creates a moveable boundary post, based on the scale of the artist’s own body. During the Publiek Park, every Saturday between 14:00 and 16:00 the work is performatively activated by the artist.

Jiyoung Kim (1994, KR/BE) is a Korean artist based in Antwerp. Her work revolves around an interest in the written word and symbolic imaginaries, converging in a search for an individual language. She uses observation, documentation and analysis as her play tools, and her work is often informed by her cultural background. The foundation of Jiyoung Kim’s artistic practice is laid by her training in tailoring. The craft of creating garments, which was passed down generationally in the artist’s family, permeates her practice through a particular sensitivity to working with bodies, as well as an interest in systems of measurement and reference that arise from the individual into the universal. From describing one’s personal space to embodying a standard, a unit for communicating spatial information.

Jiyoung Kim participates in Publiek Park within the framework of a collaboration with the In Situ department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.

Rolling Border Pole, 2023
