For the first edition of Publiek Park in 2021, two pieces from the S.M.A.K. collection were presented in the casino entrance. This space mirrors the entrance of the museum on the other side of the former Festivity palace. The letters of ‘casino’ used to adorn the facade, where the letters of the S.M.A.K. are nowadays installed.
In this double, yellow-hued entrance, Wege by Lois Weinberger and Hi Story by Stefaan Dheedene face each other, similar in size and colour. Wege is a red mural in which a network of corridors, created by the bark beetle (the so-called Ips typographus), is enlarged into a calligraphic writing.
Lois Weinberger (°1947 – 2020, AT) grew up in rural Tyrol and thinks of himself as an ‘agricultural worker’. Plants on fallow ground form the impetus for drawings, sculptures, photographs, texts and installations. Weinberger makes a conscious choice for what he himself calls ‘second-rate nature’ with a pivotal role for wild plants.
